The European Documentary Marketplace – Connecting the Dots
A conference and a debate on circulation and distribution, bringing together some of the most relevant
international representatives from different circuits who will talk about their experience, perspective and
case studies, and contribute to the debate and sharing of best practices on the different approaches and
models of circulation of cinematographic works. Aiming at distribution / release of European
documentaries, this initiative focusses on the role of international festivals, distributors, exhibitors and
digital platforms.
 
Nebulae 2020, State of the Art
Organised in collaboration with Creative Europe Desks, each edition of State of the Art aims at launching
a debate on an industry topic, which will be analysed together with experts. In 2020, in collaboration with
the Creative Europe Desks from Portugal, Austria, Italy (Turin) and Spain (Basque Country), the topic will
be the distribution of films in different contexts and European countries. An afternoon with speakers,
discussions and group work, intending to contribute to a wider discussion about the European film market.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Alessandro Gropplero
Head of international relations of the FVG Audiovisual Fund since May 2007. In this capacity he has
planned the international policy of the fund and managed a variety of initiatives, such as “When East
Meets West Co- Production Forum”, “Ties that Bind Asia-Europe Producers Workshop” (both supported
by the Creative Europe Programme) and “RE-ACT Co- Development Funding Scheme”. He is a board
member of Eurodoc and member of the European Film Academy.
 
Pedro Borges
He was born in 1957 and has a degree in history. He taught and then worked as film journalist. He has
been working in film distribution, exhibition and production since 1990. He created Midas Filmes in 2006,
which is currently the most significant film distributor in Portugal, aside from also producing films—mainly
documentary films, but also fiction films. In 2014, he renovated and reopened Cinema Ideal in the heart of
Lisbon.
 
Salma Abdalla
Based in Vienna and LA, Autlook Filmsales is one of the leading sales agents for feature documentaries
and doc series. It offers a full spectrum of distribution, customised sales and festival strategies that helps
maximize revenues, audience engagement that fosters film-makers’ careers, and an endless passion for
the art of documentaries. Salma Abdalla started to work at Autlook in 2005.
 
Vanesa Fernández Guerra
A doctor in audiovisual communication by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), she is the
director of Zinebi – International Film Festival of Documentary and Short Film of Bilbao. Her line of
research and published work mainly focus on contemporary documentary cinema. She has carried out
research in Buenos Aires and was a visiting scholar at the International School of Film and Television
(EICTV) of San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba).
